1. Thinking back, what led you to join BOW?
At the beginning of my freshman year, I didn't know what I wanted to pursue professionally. But what I did know is that networking opportunities would give me clarity on my path. BOW allowed me to do that through their guest speakers and career workshops.Â
2. What is your coolest accomplishment and/or favorite memory from Duke?
The friendships and mentorships that I've built over the years are what makes Duke special. I'm sure many people would say the same of their own Duke experiences. The power of these relationships has become even more clear though post-graduation. I regularly keep in touch with professors who no longer have an obligation to grade papers or tests -- they stay connected because they genuinely care. I strongly recommend any of Stephen Buckley's journalism classes!
3. What led you to pursue a career in finance/real estate and how have you navigated career transitions?Â
[See answer to #6 -- I answer there how I approached pursuing a career on the sales side of S&T]
4. What’s something that every Duke student should do before graduating?
Do the chapel climb -- it's a rite of passage!
5. Could you talk a little bit about your summer internships and how they influenced your career path?
I currently work on the sales side of sales & trading. While I didn't have any internships in this field, I applied past experiences to the role. After my freshman year, I worked in real estate investments at a real estate owner, operator and developer. Later, I went on to intern in the field of real estate investor relations. Through these internships, I learned that my ideal work environment would be one that is fast-paced and front-facing.Â
6. What advice do you have for current BOW members trying to navigate their job search?
Instead of thinking about a particular role or title, take a step back to think about (A) what you're good at and (B) what you value. Using myself as an example, I've always gravitated towards being a spokesperson. At a young age, I started a teen group to help raise money and awareness for Crohn's disease, which my mom suffers from. I eventually took that role to the next level by lobbying on Capitol Hill for improved healthcare access for patients with pre-existing conditions. I similarly found myself as a spokesperson at Duke -- but in new ways -- as a student ambassador. Throughout college, I loved being a tour guide and participating on the Duke Student Alumni Board (DSAB). While all of these experiences may seem different, there is actually a common thread here: I love working with people and advocating for them. Those qualities were non-negotiables for me throughout my job search. That's why I gravitated towards entering sales. When reflecting on your own experiences, start by asking yourself 'why did I gravitate towards XYZ club or opportunity?' 'What jobs involve the qualities I enjoy?'
7. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
As long as I'm learning every day and can spend time with friends and family, I'll be happy!
